[2010 Alaska]

The morning after

We actually got some sleep. Brooke was so excited it took her a long, crazy, while to get to sleep. The bad news is that Cody doesn’t take it well. He says " just you wait until I get a bit bigger Brooke…"

Day 1- Thursday, June 3rd – Mississippi Palisades

We ate breakfast, took our last showers for a while, and finally headed down the road by 11 am. While I enjoyed my last moments of solitude in the shower I found myself saying my own goodbyes in rhythm to one of our favorite bedtime stories.  Goodbye bed, goodbye kitties, goodbye soap we’ll be back soon, I hope.  It is not that I don’t want us to have a great trip, rather I just hope everyone comes back safe and well.  The day was beautiful.  We had the windows down and the wind was wildly blowing in.  I even stuck my head out the window, mostly to escape the smell of gasoline that was coming from the camp stove fuel.  While my head was hanging out the window the air was rushing past with such vigor that it was difficult to grab a breathe of air, much like when I went skydiving and I had to move my head from side to side to find an air pocket.  It also reminded me of the trip and the rushing madness to get everything packed while still entertaining the cuties.  Brooke obviously picked up on the anxiety because she was up all Wednesday night scratching at her eczema.  She hasn’t been that bad in a while.  Scott couldn’t believe how much we didn’t sleep, and that was at home in our own beds.  He normally sleeps in the basement in quiet solitude. He calls this early “camp training”.  I also forgot to mention that everyone seems to have a sore throat and head congestion.  Not a great way to start our trip… This worried momma has to wonder what we’re doing to our cuties…

Day 2: Friday, June 4th – The Great River Road

We were up and moving by nine.  At Grant’s home we had our first “asphalt picnic”.  We didn’t intend to eat out of the van in the parking lot.  Scott asked Brooke if she wanted a snack, and before we knew it we were eating for an hour.  We found a beautiful park five minutes down the road. :-)

We are still packing...

Departure day has been moved to Thursday. There is just too much to get done to leave tomorrow, though we make lots of progress. This is one of the best parts about having so much time for the trip. It really doesn’t matter what day we leave.

[2010 Alaska]

The first step

Yesterday was tough. Leaving so many friends at work and committing to the journey was emotional. I kept picturing a bird standing at the rim of it’s nest, with the vast openness below, just contemplating flight.

[2010 Alaska van]

Looks like I'll be wrenchin over the Holiday weekend

I just had Dave at Mastertek in Algonquin check out the van.  FWIW, Dave is a great guy and I highly recommend him if you happen to need car work done.  Anyway, from time to time the van was idling a bit rough and I thought it was due to low compression in cylinder 1.  Turns out that’s not the issue.  He seems to think it is an ignition related problem.  I’ll probably just replace that coilpack and see how it goes.  The issue is that it isn’t consistent.   I suppose that is a blessing since it tents to imply that it isn’t a mechanical problem.

You are doing what?

I found a quote and discussion that gave me some comfort in trying to explain why Scott might be interested in dragging his cute children into the bear filled country.

[2010 Alaska technology]

Technology for travel

In packing for the trip I started to think about how much baggage is “required” in the digital age.  Digital Camera, PDA, Computer, cell phone and all supporting spiderweb of cords.  We considered not bringing the laptop but decided it could double as a DVD player for the kids, and for that alone it would be worth its weight in gold.
