No more backpacking tents for us..say hello to the new condo

With the help of John at REI, April and I chose a new tent.    After researching large tents online and then setting up  a couple of contenders at the store, we chose the Base Camp 6.  Did I mention that this thing is huge!!  I’m going to set it up in the backyard this weekend and seal the seams.  Hopefully I’ll get a picture with the kids in it which I’ll post here.

What about a plug in cooler?

[UPDATE] We used a Coleman 12V plug-in cooler from where else but Wal-Mart for most of the Alaska trip and it was a total PITA.  It drew to much power to be left on at night and during the day it was unable to keep up with the engine heat that radiated from the floor and the ambient temperature in the van.  That said, make sure it is off the floor with adequate airflow beneath and as far away from the exhaust pipes as possible. We’ve since switched to a 5-day cooler which has been working out much better.

The hunt is on

It was a busy day of van hunting, though no real strong candidates today.  I did get a great deal on a sleeping bag for April.  How cool is it to say that your bag has been to Nepal!

It was great to share the news

April and I have talked about traveling for extended durations for some time.  But - and it was a big BUT - how can we make it work with children?  When in all reality the question that we should have been asking is how could we not share experiences as important as these with our children.
