Scott has been hoping to see some more wildlife. We have seen some deer and caribou. Scott saw a moose far down a side road while driving, but we haven’t seen any bears. Some motorcyclists had stopped to fix a mechanical problem and along came a black bear.

The Alaska Highway was completed in just eight months during 1942. The highway was essential to moving troops and supplies up from the lower 48 to Alaska during World War II. With kids it could possibly take us eight months just to travel the Alaska Highway! We are just in awe of what these men completed despite the terrain. We are also in awe because in Chicago it takes an entire summer just to complete a short section of toll way let alone a 1,500+ mile highway.

We stopped at the South Peace Centennial Museum in the town of Beaverlodge this morning. It has many antique cars and steam engines. After chatting with the hostess we decided it might not be the most perfect museum for the cuties since it is more of a look with your eyes rather than touch with your hands museum.

Last night was spent on free Canadian soil. There was some land set aside for public use and a lot of others RVing there, it was rainy, and late so we stayed in the van for the first time. It was a far cry from the smooth transition Scott and I had down when he and I traveled, but it eventually worked. The hard part was getting Brooke to sleep on her seat. She wanted to sleep in the back which is perfectly understandable; however, there wasn’t enough room for us all. She fell asleep snuggled between Scott and I. Sometime during the night Scott put her on her seat and we all finally had some rest. I was worried about Cody being free, but he stayed in his spot for the most part. I enjoyed some extra snuggle time from both the cuties.

Scott made a delicious breakfast this morning of Pan Fried Granola from the Cooking the One Burner Way book by Melissa Gray and Buck Tilton. When Scott and I traveled the country back in ‘97 we enjoyed many good meals from this book. After Scott made the blueberry bread and Brooke’s first campfire he sat down and looked through the book again for the first time in a while. Breakfast was delicious!

Today we are headed to what Scott calls “Stifler Falls” or really Siffleur Falls. It isn’t on any of our maps, but it was a recommendation from a guy named Chris Scott talked with at our campsite in Drumheller. It is not easy to find, well at least for us. After passing it up by ten miles, we are here! :-) It turns out it is a very popular trail. It was just under five miles and two and a half hours, but we took our time when we were overlooking the falls. This photo is of the first ten minutes of this hike. Brooke was hanging onto my leg begging me to carry her. Scott finally scooped her up and after twenty minutes of her complaining about being hungry and then finally fed, we finally had a peaceful hike.

What a difference a day makes. Long hike #2 at Johnston’s Canyon today was so much more peaceful than yesterday’s Screamfest. Brooke was enjoying riding on Scott’s back so much that she would occasionally would lay back in her “easy chair”. The hike today was almost two hours long, three and a half miles, and again about 500 foot elevation gain. This trail was very popular and we spent a bit of time waiting to be able to pass others on the narrow walkways along the creek. The views were incredible. This hike was a recommendation from a Canmore Park worker at the dog park. Thanks!

We drove down the road a bit from our campsite nestled in the Rockies to have breakfast and attempt to fish again. Brooke really enjoys plunking rocks in the water instead, so Scott taught her how to skip rocks this morning instead since the fish were long gone.
